Holidays in Granville, at Camping bord de mer
Granville, also known as “the corsair city”, is situated in the bay of Mont Saint-Michel, 40km from the Belle Etoile campsite and is now a well-known seaside resort. It’s also known as the “Monaco of the North”, because here you can enjoy a holiday atmosphere all year round.
Between sea bathing and gourmet breaks, it’s always good to spend some time in Granville to enjoy its port, its pedestrian streets and its covered market, as well as Chaussey, a simply unmissable treasure.
From 1450 onwards, cod was fished in Newfoundland by boats from Granville and the surrounding area. As the years went by, the town logically became a key port for cod, as is Saint-Malo.
The Corsair City
Under Louis XIV, Granville was an active port with a large number of sailors, which meant that many privateers were available for the royal service at the time.
There were also 15 admirals, most notably Pléville Le Pelley, also known as “the privateer with the wooden leg”.
The seaside resort
Although it has a long history, Granville became a major seaside resort at the end of the 19th century. Tourists love to spend time here and, above all, enjoy the general atmosphere typical of ports, with a touch of elegance inherited from the city dwellers who come here to recharge their batteries.
Granville is a major tourist destination, thanks in no small part to the gentle way of life here.
Marité’s home port
This is the last wooden Newfoundlander. It is the last witness of a time of great fishing in Newfoundland. Granville has become her home port over the years, and while she has enjoyed a great deal of activity, particularly in the media, this old wooden rig has been restored, with work starting in Cherbourg before moving on to Saint-Vaast and ending up in Granville in 2012.
The Upper Town
When you come to Granville, you simply must visit the old town. Protected by ramparts, you can discover a museum of modern art, private mansions and the Musée du Vieux Granville.
Leaving the historic heart of the town, you can go to Le Roc and visit the aquarium Le Roc des Harmonies and the Semaphore.
Discover an exceptional landscape on your way to Chausey
Chausey is quite simply the island district of Granville, and is the pride of its inhabitants. We’re talking here about the Chausey archipelago, an island offering visitors dreamlike landscapes and located less than a kilometre from Granville.
When you arrive, you’re in for a complete change of scenery and a vision of paradise. Time seems to stand still here, with white sandy beaches as far as the eye can see. It’s easy to get to Chausey thanks to the many companies offering crossings from Granville.
