It was during the Second World War, on June 6 1944 to be precise, that the Battle of Normandy took place. Allied forces landed on the beaches, and here the fighting began. This battle is symbolized by five beaches, known as the landing beaches. There are two in the American sector (Utah Beach and Omaha Beach), and three in the Canadian and British sectors (Gold Beach, Juno Beach and Sword Beach).
Given their symbolic and historical importance, they should be included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. An application was submitted by the French government in January 2018. Places steeped in history, but also very beautiful, we invite you to come and discover the five Normandy landing beaches.
Utah Beach
Utah Beach stretches from Sainte-Marie-du-Mont to Quinéville. The Allies decided to seize the port of Cherbourg, and chose this beach as a strategic location. Today, you can visit the Utah Beach Museum, built on the exact spot where American troops landed on June 6, 1944.
This commemorative museum takes you on a complete, chronological tour, immersing you in the history of that decisive day. A real B-26 bomber is on display.
Utah Beach is around 45 kilometers from Camping Belle Étoile. Easy access via the D971.
Omaha Beach
Omaha Beach is one of the most famous beaches of the Normandy landings. And with good reason! It was on this beach that the entire operation was almost compromised. Sadly, American troops lost many men that day. That’s why this beach is nicknamed Bloody Omaha. On this beach, you can admire the statue of the Braves. Not far away, the Colleville American Cemetery, created in 1956, boasts 9387 white headstones, lined up on 70 hectares of lawn. An indescribable emotion pervades this place.
Omaha Beach is located in Colleville-sur-Mer, 73 kilometers from our campsite. Access via D971 and N13.
Gold Beach
Gold Beach is right in the middle of the landing zone. It was here, in Arromanches, that a large artificial harbour was built. If you go to this beach, you’ll still see the remains of this construction. For a reconstruction, you can visit the Musée du Débarquement, which tells the whole story of this port, or treat yourself to a cinema session in Arromanches. The circular screen immerses you in the history of the Battle of Normandy.
This beach is 90 kilometers from Camping Belle Étoile, accessed via the N13.
Juno Beach
We also enter the Canadian sector with Juno Beach. Here, on June 6, 1944, 9,000 British and 14,000 Canadians arrived. The beach stretches for some 8 kilometers, between Gold Beach and Sword Beach. The aim of these troops was to cut the road link between Caen and Bayeux, and then capture the Carpinet airfield. Sadly, many soldiers lost their lives that day.
Juno Beach is located in Courseuilles-sur-Mer, 108 kilometers from our campsite. Access via N13.
Sword Beach
This beach was assigned to the British Second Army. It is the only landing beach where French commandos also landed. It stretches for 8 kilometers from Ouistreham to Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer.
It was here that the international ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of D-Day took place in 2014.
Sword Beach is 127 kilometers from the campsite. It can be reached via the A84 freeway.
